What is the PGA Junior League?

The PGA Junior League started in 2011 as a way for junior boys and girls age 13 and under to get together and compete in a fun way while also learning about the game and themselves both on and off the course. The league has grown to more than 60,000 players in every state. It is supported by the PGA of America and a team of global ambassadors like Rory McIlroy, Lexie Thompson, Rickie Fowler, NBA star Steph Curry and soccer hero Alex Morgan.

What is the playing format?

The league is designed to get kids competing on the course in a supportive way. Experienced players work as mentors for less-experienced players, and two-person teams cooperate in a scramble format. It’s a great way for everybody to hit shots that matter without the pressure of signing for an individual score in a stroke play tournament.

Do I have to be an experienced player?

No! The PGA Junior League is a great place for players at every level to learn and compete together. Beginners as young as six years old will be able to take advantage of both the extensive practice and coaching and learning from more experienced players on the course. More accomplished players are also rewarded for their play by being selected to “all-star” teams that can move on to regional and national tournaments at the end of the fall season.

Do I need my own clubs?

No! All you need is an interest in the game and a ride to Cog Hill. If you don’t have clubs, we have plenty of junior sets available for you to use. Just let us know ahead of time so we can have the right size and configuration ready when you get here.

How much coaching will I get?

One of the best parts of the PGA Junior League is the amount of instruction a young player gets over the course of each season. Weekly practices with our nationally-recognized coaches give players the skills they need at an extremely reasonable cost. The spring practice season offers more than six hours of group instruction for less than the cost of a single private lesson. In the summer and fall, players get more than 12 hours of group lessons along with a full slate of matches for $250. It’s the most cost effective way to promote a junior player’s development and love for the game you can find.

What is the dress code?

You can wear whatever clothes you like, along with sneakers or golf shoes. Be sure to dress warmly for the spring and fall sessions.

What is the history of the program at Cog Hill?

We’ve had teams at Cog Hill since the program started in 2012, and Cog Hill hosted the first PGA Junior League National Championship that first season. The Cog Hill team has qualified for the regional championships six times, and for the PGA Junior League National Championship—limited to the 12 regional champions—in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.
